Radio Mexico

Good Mexican food in Melbourne without (too much) crazy.

What we ate:
Tacos!
Al pastor (otway free range pork carnitas)
Pescado de la casa (grilled fish with black bean and corn salsa)
Camaron (chipotle prawn and slaw)
Barbacoa (slow cooked organic saltbush lamb and red cabbage)
And
Mushroom, asparagus and bean quesadillas
Frijoles

Yes, we know. Another no-bookings, height-of-coolness hipsterville Mexican restaurant in Melbourne. This Food Guy didn’t go without some preconceived ideas. But he did go with a longing for fresh Mexican food and a fun vibe, and Radio Mexico delivered.

TFG was impressed firstly with the friendly staff. Yes, there would be a slight wait (a Wednesday night at about 6.30pm). But they would be happy to give us a call if we wanted to go and have a drink at the nearby Dog’s Bar, which we happily did.

In just over half an hour, TFG was seated in the buzzing restaurant trying to decide what to order from the delicious sounding menu. We decided to start with some tacos, and didn’t get much further – the first couple were so great, we just kept on ordering them. The al pastor were filled with a generous amount of gorgeous pulled pork:

…and the fresh corn and bean salsa that accompanied the grilled fish was so good it was clearly trying for more than just a “taco filler” title:

When the prawn tacos were brought accidently to the table we made the mistake of pointing out the error and sending them away – only to decide later they had looked so delicious, we may as well try them. Delicious they were – and a nice amount of warmth from the chipotle.

Lastly, the slow cooked lamb tacos were beautiful and tender:

Not wanting to go home with having only sampled the tacos, TFG also ordered frijoles, which were lovely, dark and chunky, and the vegetarian quesadilla – less impressive than its taco cousins, but demolished quite quickly all the same:

With such fresh, tasty food and happy service, TFG did not mind the no-bookings, (small) wait for the table or the Very Cool Crowd at Radio Mexico. If this is Melbourne Mexican, we approve.
